Detroit police: Girl, 4, shoots self with father's gun
Police say a 4-year-old Detroit girl accidentally shot herself after finding a gun in a vehicle.
Authorities tell WDIV-TV the child discovered her father's Glock 9 mm pistol in the glove box of his sport utility vehicle and fired a round into her thigh early today. She's in stable condition at a Detroit hospital. http://www.freep.com/article/20120716/NEWS01/120716003/Detroit-police-Girl-shoots-self-with-father-s-gun?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE Yep, handguns are just a tool, like a hammer, screw driver or a level. Incidents like this show why they need to be better regulated along with irresponsible owners. I hope dad does some jail time. While I'm not against owning and carrying a handgun, I think those that do need to be better trained and scrutinized.

1. Life saving tool, in the right hands...
|
however.com when in the hands of a novice or other untrained/undertrained/kid they can become dangerous if mishandled.
Good news was this device was chambered in a 9mm everyone knows the 9mm and 5.56 are wounding rounds not meant for serious self defense. Bicycles are dangerous, let's ban them so fewer people die. |

10. No one said ban them in this post.
|
I would suggest more regulation and harsh punishment for careless handling. At least have the man charged with a felony so he can never make the same mistake again. For those that are responsible and careful, more power to them.

2. Basic gun safety should be taught in public schools
|
Anyone who finished high school should know better than to leave an unsecured, loaded weapon where an unqualified person can get it.

6. The irony is the car she was in represents a much great threat to her life.
|
In the 1 to 4 age group, car accidents and drowning represent 58 % of all accidental deaths.
Guns, interesting enough, don't even warrant their own separate category but are simply lumped in with "other injuries.". http://www.cdc.gov/SafeChild/ChildhoodInjuryReport/Chapter3.html |

7. I am sorry that the little girl was shot
|
but her father was negligent. You never leave a gun where someone can find it,especially a child and especially in a car. You NEVER leave a gun in a car. I just read yesterday where an FBI agent lost an MP-5 and AR-15 machine guns, a hand gun, a shot gun and a bunch of other goodies when they were stolen from his car., see...even the FBI is stupid.
These accidents are preventable. Lock them up or keep them on your person, do not leave them lying around. How many times do these idiots have to be told. |

8. Let's change a few words
Police say a 4-year-old Detroit girl accidentally {cut} herself after finding a {saw}in a {workshop}. We would all agree it is a terrible accident for the child and the father was negligent for leaving a dangerous object, in operating condition, where a child could access it. Would we also all agree: Incidents like this show why they need to be better regulated along with irresponsible owners. I hope dad does some jail time. While I'm not against owning and carrying a {power saw}, I think those that do need to be better trained and scrutinized. |
